Is your work edited and almost good to go? A proofread is the final check of your fully edited book from start to finish prior to publication. It weeds out any remaining errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, layout and style, and checks for consistency throughout. This final stage of the writing process ensures your book is well-presented and professional.
A proofread can include checking spelling, grammar, punctuation, capitalisation, hyphenation, headings, typeface, spacing, spelling and numerical style, headers and footers, illustrations and their corresponding captions, references, bibliographies, all prelims and end matter (such as title page, contents page, acknowledgements, book blurb, About the Author, etc).
For e-books and print-on-demand, particular attention will be paid to formatting to ensure compliancy with your chosen retailer or distributor, and thus a smooth transition when you upload your manuscript. Should you be looking to traditionally publish, rest assured your manuscript will be formatted according to publishing industry standards in preparation for submission to agents and publishers. I will abide by your preferred English usage standards (e.g. UK or US, etc).
I will work with your manuscript in Microsoft Word using Word's Track Changes facility - this will allow you to see all the changes I make and you can decide whether to accept them or not. If you are unfamiliar with Track Changes, I will talk you through how to use it. Or if you prefer to work via PDF or on paper, we can discuss how we'll do this.
Should you have a preferred style guide you wish to adhere to (a list of preferred formatting and style choices), I will implement it accordingly in the proofreading process. If you do not have a style guide, I will compile one for you free of charge based on your manuscript's most consistent choices.
